5. Is this person Spanish/Hispanic/Latino? Mark the “No” box if not Spanish/Hispanic/Latino. No, not Spanish/Hispanic/Latino

Yes, Mexican, Mexican Am, Chicano

Yes, Puerto Rican

Yes, Cuban

Yes, other Spanish/Hispanic/Latino (print group)

The triple definition of “Spanish/Hispanic/Latino” that the Census Bureau now uses shows just how difficult it is to define us—even for ourselves. When I had to fill out the survey for my son Nicolás, I had to check off almost every category so as not to lie. It ended up saying that he was “White” like his paternal grandparents, “Cuban” like his maternal grandparents, “Puerto Rican” like his mother, and “Mexican” like his father. I didn’t know how to explain that he also surely has some indigenous blood in him, as I do. Maybe the next census will have a space for clarifying that. But before any other single definition, the Hispanic identity is a mixture. And there is my son Nicolás—a white Puertocubanomexicanoamerican with indigenous traces and born in Miami—to prove it all.
